This allows for easy blending and helps avoid stripes and uneven patches of eye or cheek colour. The skin on the eyelid is naturally oily and sticky; a light dusting of powder will absorb the oils and prevent the makeup from creasing in the folds. Noses often present oil and shine, so "powder your nose" as the saying goes.
